Google launches blog search – Computerworld

Google Inc. has added to its menu of search alternatives the option to search through the ever-popular online journals called weblogs, or blogs.

The new search service, which went live on Wednesday, is in test, or beta, form, and can be accessed through a variety of Web addresses, including www.google.com/blogsearch and http://search.blogger.com.

Yahoo launches beta of revamped Web mail – Computerworld

Yahoo Inc. has launched a test of the new version of its Web mail service with a radically redesigned user interface that works more like a typical desktop e-mail application, the Sunnyvale, Calif.-based company announced on Wednesday.

The beta version of the new Yahoo Mail will be made available to an undisclosed number of users in the U.S. on Wednesday, and to more users in the coming months, a Yahoo official said.

Microsoft tries, and fails, to recruit open-source guru – Computerworld: Microsoft Corp. may be softening its rhetoric against Linux and open-source software, but that doesn’t mean the company is ever going to be able to hire Eric Raymond. Earlier this week, a recruiter from the software vendor tried to lure Raymond, one of the open-source movement’s most visible boosters, he said in an interview Friday.

Mozilla offers temporary fix for Firefox flaw CNET News.com:

Responding to the disclosure of a serious Web browser flaw, the Mozilla Foundation offered on Friday a temporary fix to protect Firefox and Mozilla users.

The downloadable fix protects against attacks that take advantage of a new, unpatched flaw that could let attackers secretly run malicious software on users’ PCs. The flaw was disclosed late Thursday by security researcher Tom Ferris, sending Mozilla staff into damage-control mode.

Persistent URL Home Page: “A PURL is a Persistent Uniform Resource

Locator.

Functionally, a PURL is a URL. However, instead of pointing directly

to the location of an Internet resource, a PURL points to an

intermediate resolution service. The PURL resolution service

associates the PURL with the actual URL and returns that URL to the

client. The client can then complete the URL transaction in the

normal fashion. In Web parlance, this is a standard HTTP

redirect.”
